What’s better than explaining modern day agriculture to someone? Showing them. That is exactly what the Pig Adventure at Fair Oaks Farms does. It shows people what modern day swine production looks like, and it eliminates the scary perceptions that groups like the Humane Society of the United States and others try to form in consumers’ minds. This unique “teaching and educating” experience shows people that pigs are well cared for and appreciated for what they contribute to society.
It was a big risk to build the Pig Adventure and invite the entire world to see inside an actual operating commercial sow farm. The Pig Adventure is in a prime location, located just 75 miles south of Chicago. It has had visitors from all over the state, nation and world.
This idea definitely could have failed and most likely wasn’t heavily backed by a lot of producers. Fair Oaks puts everything “out there,” and when people don’t know much about agriculture, they certainly don’t understand the concepts of what goes on in a sow farm. This farm is helping to change consumers’ mindset.
The Fair Oaks Pig Adventure is set up in such an amazing way that it provides all the necessary information first before showing guests what the barn looks like. The murals, hands-on displays, and knowledgeable guides illustrate many facts about the pork industry that people would never know.
It is a wonderful place for children to go because they become informed about agriculture firsthand and get to see how it really works. If you haven’t been there yet, I strongly encourage you to go!
