Canada's hog inventories as of July 1 totalled 11.895 million head, up from 11.800 million at the same time a year earlier, and fractionally higher than the 11.835 million during the quarter ended April 1, figures released Monday by Statistics Canada revealed.

This was the first increase in July hog inventories on a year-to-year basis since June 1, 2006 and the second consecutive quarter of growth, the government agency said.

Quebec and Alberta reported total inventory declines from July 1, 2010 at 0.5% and 0.9%, respectively. The Atlantic region and the remaining provinces reported gains in inventory levels.

Farmers reported 1.3 million sows and gilts on farms on July 1, down 1.1% from a year earlier and 5.1% below the level on July 1, 2009, Statistics Canada said.

Hog farmers anticipate that the number of sows to farrow in Canada during the third and fourth quarters in 2011, will remain unchanged from the same periods in 2010, the government agency said.

During the second quarter of 2011, a total of 5.1 million hogs were sent to slaughter, down 1.3% from the same period in 2010, Canadian hog slaughter peaked in the fourth quarter of 2004 at just over six million head.

Hog exports amounted to 1.4 million head during the second quarter of 2011, down 3.1% from the same quarter in 2010. Second-quarter exports were 42.5% below the peak of 2.4 million head recorded in July 2007, the government agency said.
