Firefighters are on the scene of a blaze at the Patrick Cudahy Inc. meat plant, Cudahy, Wis. The fire, first reported Sunday evening around 9:45 p.m. has yet to be brought under control and an evacuation has been ordered for homes and businesses within a 1 mile radius of the business, reports Meatingplace.com.

Smithfield Foods, owner of the plant, said fire damage was extensive, but added that the employees in the building when the fire started all escaped unhurt.

With smoke still spewing from the plant at Noon Monday, the Mayor of the Milwaukee suburb had declared a state of emergency.

The plant’s ammonia supply was of particular concern in battling the fire. Access to the area of the building where the fire was burning had been a problem earlier. No firefighters are thought to be injured.
