After rolling out its business venture in the beef market a couple of months ago, VeriPrime has expanded into the pork market. It has established a new, long-term relationship with, including its division eHARVEST and its subsidiary PigCHAMP, which reaches 75 percent of North American pork producers. The group will provide information and database management services to VeriPrime Pork.

"VeriPrime Pork is a revolutionary cooperative owned and directed by pork producers that will enable them to provide pre-harvest production and safety assurances to the consumer and be paid for providing them," says David Farnum, DVM, vice-president of "Sharing the information involved and maintaining identity of
VeriPrime-eligible groups requires the kinds of technology and services that eHARVEST has been providing its customers since 1981.”

In effect, Farnum says, this new venture will allow current and future eHarvest members the opportunity to market a new asset they've not previously able to market.

Likewise, Nate McDonald, DVM, president of VeriPrime Pork explains, "In each livestock species VeriPrime is identifying leading service providers. With eHARVEST, we have a chance to work with the leading pork technology and service company."

VeriPrime Beef’s membership includes organizations representing more than 60 percent of the annual fed-cattle supply. Expectations are for a similar acceptance rate in the pork industry. Some of the assurance services that will be licensed when the VeriPrime Pork model is fully operational include: standardized animal welfare and traceability (including country-of-origin labeling.)

"This represents the next generation of food production and food-safety assurance for the consumer, driven by producers but including all participants in the food-supply chain," says McDonald.
