Burger King announces that USDA has granted the company’s petition for enforcement of the Federal Humane Slaughter Act, paving the way for stepped up enforcement of the act.

Burger King filed the petition after independent members of their own Animal Well-being Advisory Council expressed concerns over the lack of enforcement of the federal law. The Federal Humane Slaughter Act requires USDA to inspect slaughterhouses and ensure that standards relating to the humane treatment of food animals are met.

USDA indicated in a letter to Burger King that “the fundamental issues raised by the petition will be met in the rulemaking.” No date has been set for the announcement of the proposed rule.

Among the items under consideration are stunning procedures, minimum cage space requirements, ventilation standards, conveyor feeding and water access.
