As of Sept. 1, there was 68.7 million hogs and pigs on U.S. farms, according to USDA’s September Hogs & Pigs Report. That’s 2 percent more than on Sept. 1, 2007 and 1 percent more than on June 1 of this year.

USDA reported the breeding herd at 6.05 million head, down 3 percent from last year and 1 percent less than the previous quarter.  Market hog inventory, at 62.6 million head, was 3 percent higher than last September, and 2 percent higher than in the second quarter.

Looking at the pig crop, the June/August period produced 29.3 million head, up 1 percent from 2007 levels, and 10 percent more than in 2006.  Sows farrowing during that period totaled 3.08 million head, 2 percent less than in 2007, but 6 percent than in 2006. The sows farrowing in the third quarter represented 51 percent of the breeding herd. The number of pigs saved per litter averaged 9.51 head for the June/August period compared to 9.29 head last year.

Related to operation size, the number of pigs saved per litter averaged 7.80 pigs for operations raising 1 to 99 hogs/pigs, and 9.60 for operations producing more than 5,000 hogs/pigs.

Looking to the future, U.S. pork producers say the will farrow 3.01 million sows during the fourth quarter, down 5 percent from 2007 actual farrowings for the period, but up 2 percent from 2006.  Intended farrowings for December 2008/February 2009, at 2.98 million sows, are down 3 percent from the previous year’s scenario.

The total number of hogs under contract that are owned by operations with more than 5,000 head, but raised by contractees, accounted for 43 percent of the total U.S. hog inventory. That’s up from 40 percent from last year.
