A publication for pork producers in Iowa looking into niche-marketing opportunities has been updated to reflect market, industry and organizational changes. Those interested in learning more about these groups can download the new version from the Iowa Pork Industry Center's Web site. The publication, “Comparing Swine Niche Market Opportunities,” is available free of charge at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/ipic/information/IowaPorkNiche.pdf .

Iowa State University Extension swine field specialist Mark Storlie created the original niche-market publication, released in August 2001, and updated the information in this new version.

“Interest in pork niche-marketing opportunities continues to grow among Iowa producers,” says Storlie. “We want to make sure people have good information about what’s available and how to learn more.”

The eight-page publication offers a comparison of five existing niche-market groups in Iowa: Niman Ranch Pork Company, Organic Valley Pork Pool, Truline Premium Pork, 100% Berkshire Pork and Five Star Premium Pork Company. Information was provided by people from each of those groups (the information is current as of Nov. 1, 2003.)
