Triumph Foods will not be building a pork slaughter and processing plant in East Moline, Ill. Company officials reported this week that the plans are now off the shelf. 

"We were working on a schedule that would have meant starting construction in January 2009," Pat Lilly, chief administrative officer told Meatingplace.com. "But with financial markets like they are, that just became unfeasible."

He reports that the company would still like to build a second pork plant, currently estimated at $150 million. "Obviously we need to wait for things to improve to make that a viable option," Lilly said.

The Illinois plant would have processed 18,000 hogs a day and employed some 2,000 people.

Meanwhile, Lilly pointed out that expansion plans at Triumph's St. Joseph, Mo., facility are proceeding.
