Swift & Co. has laid off 58 workers at its corporate headquarters in Greeley, Colo. This action is not related to the December raids at six of the company's meat-processing plants, say Swift officials. Rather, this action is part of a larger cost-cutting effort planned last fall to boost the company's competitiveness.
This latest action reduces Swift's corporate staff by 10 percent. The layoffs are immediate and affect non-union workers. Another 12 job vacancies in the corporate office will not be filled, and the company plans to reduce expenses for contract services and professional fees.
These actions are projected to generate about $15 million in net annualized saving by May (the end of the company's fiscal year.)
