Swift & Co. has finished a $20-million expansion at its Worthington, Minn., packing/processing plant. As the Argus Reader newspaper points out, Swift is the only U.S. pork processor certified to export to European Union nations. The Worthington plant also ships products to more than 25 countries, including Japan.
The expansion totals 80,000 square feet, including areas for the company's workers, which tally 2,000. Another 300 new positions will be added. One of the new features is a split-are cafeteria where employees working in different parts of the processing plant will remain in specific areas– the point is to reduce cross contamination risks.
The plant expansion also is geared toward growing Swift's value-added product ventues.
