Smithfield Food's venture into biofuels will be changing hands. BioEnergy LLC, which is a Smithfield affiliate, will be acquired by Metalico, the biofuels arm of Beacon Energy Crop.

Smithfield's BioEnergy assets consist of an operating biodiesel plant with a 12-million-gallon annual production capacity. The plant, located in Cleburne, Texas, specializes in processing animal fats and other secondary feed stocks.

Beacon officials say they plan to retain all Smithfield BioEnergy personnel now involved with the plant's operations and business.
