Smithfield Packing, a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods, the has opened a $100 million plant to process boneless cooked hams in Kinston, N.C. Smithfield says the plant will employ about 300 people and contribute more than $1.5 million in annual wages to the local economy. The plant is Smithfield's second in Kinston -- about 20 miles south of Greenville, N.C. -- and its seventh in North Carolina, where it employs more than 11,000 people.

The Kinston plant will produce 90 million pounds of pork annually, including deli ham and sliced lunch meat.
