Smithfield Foods issued its annual Corporate Social Responsibility Report, which focuses on the company’s commitment to being socially responsible in all facets of its operations.
This is Smithfield Foods’ first Corporate Social Responsibility Report. In previous years, the company issued an annual Stewardship Report, which provided detailed information about the company’s performance record on the environment, animal welfare, employee safety and community involvement.

Here are a few of the accomplishments for Smithfield Foods during 2005:
- Smithfield Foods became the first company in its industry to achieve ISO 14001 certification of its Environmental Management System for all
pork production facilities and all pork and beef processing facilities, except for recent acquisitions. U.S. Smithfield’s Polish farms’ EMSachieved ISO 14001 certification.
- Compass Group North America consulted with
and the U.S.-based nonprofit Environmental Defense to develop a first-of-its-kind purchasing policy related to the use of antibiotics in pork production. Smithfield
- All farms owned by Murphy-Brown LLC, Smithfield’s pork production subsidiary, and Smithfield’s Tar Heel, N.C., processing plant received USDA’s “Process Verified” certification.
