(AP) Just in time for Easter, pork producer Smithfield Foods is donating 35,000 pounds of ham to Hampton Roads food banks.

Both the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia in Norfolk and the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula will receive 17,500 pounds of donated hams.

Norfolk food bank spokesman Dani Ayers says it is one of the largest donations in the charity's history and comes at a crucial time because spring is traditionally a tough time for donations.

Smithfield Foods is the nation's largest hog producer and processor. The donation is part of the company's Helping Hungry Homes program.
