Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, is expected to take up the 2007 Farm Bill the week of Oct. 22. The Agriculture Committee can move forward now that the Senate Finance Committee has approved legislation to pay for Farm Bill programs, including a $3 billion increase in agricultural spending,
NPPC is pushing for a Farm Bill that strengthens the competitiveness of the U.S. pork industry. Specifically, NPPC wants language to fix the mandatory country-of-origin labeling law that is identical to the language included in the Farm Bill approved by the U.S. House.
NPPC also wants senators to oppose provisions that would ban packer ownership of hogs, require 25 percent of hogs be bought on the spot market and create an Office of Special Counsel to investigate competition issues.
