Sara Lee Corp. officials have announced a restructuring plan for the company. Among the points that it includes is the release of about 1,700 workers, and the closing of a pork plant.

The West Point, Miss., pork processing and spice production facilities are scheduled to close on March 30. That means Sara Lee will lay off 1,200 workers from that site.

"After looking at our business, we determined that these facilities will not allow us to meet our efficiency or long-term profitability expectations," says Ken Brandenburg, Sara Lee's vice president of food and beverage operations.

Another 489 jobs will be cut company wide, but officials did not indicate which jobs or divisions will be affected.
