Russia will purchase 100,000 tons of U.S. pork in 2009 according to agreements between the two governments. It was also announced that the U.S. will supply 750,000 tons of poultry meat to Russia.
Meat Russia adds that these figures represent new quotas agreed to by commerce specialists of Russia and the United States. Russia is the fourth largest export market for U.S. pork
The report adds that the Americans point out the new quotas are 20 percent lower than expected, explaining that Russian poultry production has been growing by 15 to 17 percent annually in recent years. Nevertheless, U.S. officials consider this agreement favorable to the American meat industry.
American Meat Institute says that the Russian Federation is the number one export market for U.S. poultry meat. U.S. exports of poultry and pork to the Russian Federation reached $720 million and $191 million, respectively, in 2007.
