Many finishing contracts have or soon will expire (Table 13). Ten percent of the growers report that their production contract is “on going, indefinite, or renewed one turn at a time.” Another 18 percent said their contract will expire in 2001, but many of these where also one-turn renewable contracts. Approximately one-fourth of the contracts will expire in 2002-2003, another 15 percent in 2004-2005. More than 20 percent of the contracts extend beyond 2005.

Nearly 60 percent of the contracts were written for a term of 5 years or more. These longer terms were particularly important when it comes to securing building financing. However, nearly one-third of the contracts were written for three years or less.
