Visitors to the Iowa pork tent at the 2010 Iowa State Fair in Des Moines will notice a new menu item this year. The Iowa Pork Producers Association is introducing the ground pork slider, a mini-pork burger featuring two ounces of grilled fresh, ground pork on a cocktail bun.

The new offering will be offered as a separate sandwich or as part of a traditional Iowa Pork Tent dinner. The pork slider is the first new menu item introduced by IPPA at the state fair since 1999.

“The IPPA pork tent committee has been looking for a new menu item and one of the committee members suggested the slider,” said Alison Swanson, IPPA marketing and programs director. “The committee felt the slider would be a great addition to our pork tent menu, especially for children who don’t have a big appetite.”

The committee found an Iowa processing company that could supply the mini-pork burgers and made the decision to offer it at this year’s Iowa State Fair. IPPA hopes to sell at least 1,000 sliders this year.

“The ground pork slider will be competitively priced and may be one of the cheapest food items at the fair,” Swanson added. “Since we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Iowa pork tent this year, it was appropriate to introduce a new menu item.”

The Iowa Pork Tent will again offer the Iowa Chop, grilled pork loin and shredded barbecue pork sandwiches and pork burgers. The Pork Chop on a Stick will still be available at IPPA’s concession stands.

The Iowa State Fair will be held Aug. 12-22.
