The Pork Checkoff is promoting pork during late summer and fall through partnerships with Holiday Inn, Country Kitchen and others.

“With predictions of low prices, these fourth-quarter promotions will be beneficial to create an increased demand for pork,” says Steve Schmeichel, a pork producer from Hurley, S.D., and chairman of the Pork Checkoff Demand Enhancement committee. “The pork industry really needs the Pork Checkoff to help the demand for pork.”

Prior to the Fourth of July, the Pork Checkoff sponsored a promotion that included taking Famous Dave’s “Feed for Two” platters to disc jockeys while they were on air to promote discussion of pork products. Baskets, which included coupons for two pounds of Famous Dave’s ribs, were provided for giveaways.

The Pork Checkoff also is establishing a partnership with Jewel-Osco food and drug stores. Coupons will feature money off of pork and Famous Dave’s sauces. Frequency cards for purchases of pork will be used during the campaign.

Country Kitchen is launching two new pork dishes on its permanent menu. Pork loin will be featured in a cinnamon pork loin dinner and in apple pork loin melt sandwich, beginning in September.

Holiday Inn began featuring one pork product quarterly in its restaurants and room service in June. Holiday Inn is sponsoring these events in Ohio, Michigan and Washington, D.C.

Taco Johns and the Pork Checkoff are working together on a 12-store test of four new pork menu items. These items will feature shredded pork.
