Long the go-to option for niche and regional pork products, Iowa Quality Meats is closing its Clive, Iowa, pork processing plant, company officials announced this week.
Some processing sectors will end immediately, others will phase out. The closure will affect 95 workers. Joseph Sebring, president of parent company John Morrell & Co. which operates Iowa Quality Meats, said the closure as a "difficult but necessary decision." He reports that the plant had been running below capacity and losing money for years.
Morrell, and consequently Iowa Quality Meats, is a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods.
