H1N1 influenza is a human disease and is basically a public health issue says the World Animal Health Organization (OIE). The group, which is a United Nations body, goes on to add that pigs do not play a role in transmitting the disease. They say that trade in properly produced pork and pork products should not be curbed.

The group said that culling of pigs was not recommended as a way to decrease the transmission of H1N1 influenza. Some countries have banned the trade of pork and pork products from countries that have reported H1N1 influenza cases. Pork exports from the United States have been especially hard hit.
