The National Pork Board and American Berkshire Association are co-funding creation of “A Pork Producer’s Guide to AMS Certification,” a handbook for producers interested in gaining USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service’s third-party certification for pork products.

The handbook will track through the process of developing certifiable standards, and the application package, including the documentation required for AMS process audits.

The Berkshire association is cooperating with the Pork Board project by sharing its own experience with the process. The ABA is applying for AMS certification of its kurobuta product, or “black pork,” which commands a premium in the Japanese market.

Mike Telford and Ken Benkstein will team up to handle research and writing of the handbook. Completion of the project is expected in early 2003.
