North Dakota Sow Center in Forest River, N.D. is getting $71,000 from the state's Agricultural Products Utilization Commission for two 5,000-sow farrowing barns. The barns are sited in an area near Edmore, N.D., and are planned to be up and running this May.

There are three other similar operations planned throughout the state. A second unit is scheduled to be built near Bottineau, N.D. Sites for the remaining two sites have not yet been determined.

APUC provides funding for ag-based projects within the state. It rejected the company's application for some $400,000 for its four sow units submitted last November. As a result, the company elected to treat units separately and submit individual requests for each.
