Deadlines are fast approaching for the National Junior Swine Association's pinnacle event - the National Junior Summer Spectacular. Scheduled June 29-July 3 in Louisville, Ky., the theme of this year's NJSS is "Welcome to the Jungle."

May 4 is the ownership deadline for gilts that will be shown at the NJSS, and entry forms must be submitted by May 14. NJSA members are allowed to exhibit up to two purebred gilts; entry fees are $30/gilt. Entry forms are available in the Spring issue of "The Pinnacle" and also online in the NJSA section at

In addition to the gilt show, six other individual competitions are offered: speech, photography, extemporaneous speaking, skillathon, showmanship and poster contests. Entries for these contests are free if the participant is showing a gilt and $5/each if they are not. Contest entries are not due until Wednesday, July 1. Each contest will have Novice, Junior, Intermediate and Senior age divisions. New this year is the state scrapbook contest. Each state is allowed to enter one collaborative scrapbook designed and compiled by NJSA members with assistance from parents allowed. For rules on the scrapbook and all other contests, see the NJSA Handbook.

On Tuesday, June 29, gilts may begin arriving at 8 a.m. All gilts must be in place by 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 30. Wednesday will feature the skillathon, photography, poster and showmanship contests, as well as a PIGS meeting and opening ceremonies.

Thursday, July 1, will include the showmanship finals, state scrapbook judging, scholarship and award presentations, Foundation Female presentation, and voting for NJSA regional directors. The gilt show will start at 10 a.m. with the Champion Drive in the afternoon.

On Friday, July 2, the speech and extemporaneous speaking contests will be held, followed by voting for NJSA at-large directors in the morning. The afternoon will include the judging contest, followed by a pizza party, annual meeting and awards ceremony, and a dance.

Saturday, July 3, will start with breakfast and an inspirational service from Ray Perryman, followed by the sweepstakes award ceremony. The Foundation Female will sell during the NSR Hampshire sale.
