U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials are continuing to visit Swift & Co. facilities. Earlier this week, the ICE stopped by four plants and arrested three workers. As of today, ICE agents have arrested a total of 19 workers, according to an Associated Press report.
Among those in custody are a union representative and a human resources worker at Swift's Marshalltown, Iowa, pork-processing plant. They are charged with hiring and harboring illegal immigrants, among other things.
ICE spokesman Richard Rocha said that the other 17 workers, who were arrested at other plants, are being held on identity-theft charges. They appear to have used stolen identification documents.
Indications are that ICE agents have not yet completed their investigations. Rocha said that more information will be forthcoming.
