According to an Associated Press news report, the Albert Lea, Minn., City Council is making a bid for Quality Pork Processors.

The Council has approved a preliminary proposal to try to persuade Quality Pork Processors to build a plant near the city. Quality Pork has been searching for a processing site in which to place a plant that would eventually employ 100 to 200 people. The company is said to be considering Albert Lea as well as Austin, Minn., which is its current home, and Clear Lake, Iowa. Quality Pork processes pork products exclusively for Austin-based Hormel Foods.

According to Albert Lea's current proposal, the city would offer the company a site in the Northaire Industrial Park. City officials indicate they would likely use tax-increment financing to pay for the land. They further indicated that Albert Lea's port authority may consider issuing bonds to pay for the building, which it would lease to Quality Pork.
