Officials with The Maschhoffs, headquartered in Carlyle, Ill., report that the company has completed the acquisition of Pilgrims Pride of Alabama's 50 percent share of Gold Kist/MW, LLC.
When The Maschhoffs, a family farm operation, purchased the swine assets of Land O’Lakes in 2005, it became a 50/50 partner in a joint venture with Gold Kist in Georgia. "This arrangement supplied weaned pigs to our network of Production Partners," notes Julie Maschhoff, vice president of public relations for The Maschhoffs.
In 2007, Gold Kist’s share of the joint venture was acquired by Pilgrim’s Pride of Alabama.
The current transaction included the assumption of contracts with five sow farms in Georgia and Alabama. "We assumed certain sow farm contracts in Georgia and Alabama and have welcomed five new Production Partners into our system," says Maschhoff. The new Production Partners represent approximately 12,500 sows in The Maschhoffs' 130,000-sow-herd inventory.
"Production of weaned pigs from these farms will continue to be placed at Maschhoff finishing sites in Illinois and Iowa," adds Maschhoff. She further points out that the acquisition does not change the company's overall production numbers.
Other terms of the transaction were not disclosed. For more information, go to the The Maschhoffs' Web site.
