Farrow-to-finish margins up slightly

Farrow-to-finish margins were up slightly the week of May 30 to $72.66 per head compared to $72.59 the previous week, according to the latest Sterling Pork Profit Tracker. Last year at this time, margins were $4.65 per head. Lean hogs were down about $1, to $109.94 compared to $110.97 the previous week.

Pork packer margins improved again last week to $3.22 per head, compared to $1.95 the previous week. The pork cutout value was down last week to $114.48, compared to $115.03 the week of May 23.

Cattle markets finished the week ending May 31, 2014, mostly steady to higher, according to the latest information from the Sterling Beef Profit Tracker. After topping $192 the previous week, last week’s feeder steer placements were down to $191.17 per hundredweight. Feeder steers continue to outpace last year’s prices by more than $60 per hundredweight and are up more than $12 compared to last month.

Fed cattle were mostly steady last week, increasing just $0.01 to $144.91. This is $3.45 per hundredweight down from last month but more than $20 higher than fed prices were last year when they were around $131. Feed costs were down last week to $359.68 compared to $367 the previous week. Total costs were also down on the week, with total costs for this week’s feedlot placement averaging $1,973.81 compared to $1,993.41 the previous week.

After dropping to $157 per head around Memorial Day, feedlot margins increased last week to $164.85 per head. One month ago, feeders were earning nearly $200 per head, but last year at this time, feedlot margins were negative $108.82.

Packer margins increased again last week, increasing to $62.79 per head compared to $20.66 the previous week. The beef cutout value was $230.78, compared to $227.77 the previous week, $229.02 last month and $203.05 at this time last year.
