Legislation has been introduced that would give the USDA authority to initiate meat recalls, reports Meatingplace.com. The legislation is sponsored by Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.).

Under current law, the USDA asks the company involved to comply with a recall. Udall says this takes too much time to remove possibly tainted meat from store shelves.

Former USDA Under Secretary for Food Safety Richard Raymond says the legislation is unnecessary and actually may hinder the system.
