PureTek Genetics, a swine genetic service company, officially commenced operations on April 28, 2010. PureTek is the U.S. service, sales and marketing arm for the owners which include Whiteshire Hamroc, Waldo Farms Genetics, Tempel Genetics, Cedar Ridge Farms, Shaffer Superior Genetics, and Northern Genetic Management.
The partnering companies are responsible for 98 percent of purebred breeding stock exported from the United States according to the National Swine Registry.
The individual source farms comprising the PureTek system currently have 5,000 nucleus level sows producing Maternal and Terminal lines and an additional 7,000 Grandparent (GP) females in multiplication.
“The core philosophy of the company and its members is to partner with clients to provide genetics and associated services to impact their bottom-line performance. The members have taken a natural strength in their many years of combined experience and dedication to genetic improvement to form a strong company which I believe will have a profound impact on the United States pork industry,” says, Neil DeBuse of Northern Genetic Management.
Founding members of PureTek Genetics have excelled in regional markets through strong customer service and disciplined genetic improvement. The group will draw on its extensive gene pool and unique attributes to position the company more formally at a national level.
The coordination of successful genetic programs within each member nucleus has established PureTek as a leader in balancing sustained lifetime Maternal and Terminal performance with exceptional post‐weaning performance and carcass quality.
Mike Lemmon, CEO of member Whiteshire Hamroc indicates that, “Through continuous development within a very large nucleus herd structure, our populations of Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace and Yorkshire enable us to select specific targeted subpopulations and tailor the genetic resources to directly meet the needs of our clients.”
Commercial maternal products offered by PureTek will include Grandparent and Parent female lines with high prolificacy and excellent mothering ability, F1 females, hybrid Parent lines as well as Grandparent Yorkshire and Landrace boars. Terminal boars from Duroc, Duroc hybrid lines, and crossbred terminal lines are being produced as well. Maternal and terminal semen is available through an extensive AI network.
The PureTek genetic program effectively balances the science and art of animal breeding. PureTek utilizes a system‐wide data interface combined with BLUP technology to optimize genetic improvement strategy. Further use of commercial level testing protocols and DNA marker technology allows PureTek to engineer high‐impact genetic lines.
