Commercial feed is the likely source of Salmonella contamination in commercial swine production units according to researchers at the College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University. Their paper, published in the November 2010 issue of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, detailed their research and analysis. reports that the team now questions the effectiveness in treating feed with heat during processing to kill any bacterial contaminants, such as Salmonella.

To complete the research, the team tested samples collected from feed bins, fecal matter and barns. Through their research they found contaminated feed in eight of 36 barns. Fecal and environmental samples also matched the feed samples taken from the same barn during the same time period, indicating that the feed was the source of the contamination.
