Junior 4-H and FFA swine project members and their parents are invited to attend Purdue University's Junior Pork Day on Saturday, March 5, in West Lafayette.

Participants will learn about live hog and carcass evaluation, selecting the right show pig and show day preparation. They also will receive showmanship practice.

"It's important for 4-H members and their parents to know what to look for when purchasing a show pig and how to set a price before the pig sale so they don't get caught up in the auction emotion," said Purdue Extension swine specialist Allan Schinckel. "It's not always good to buy the largest pig because by county fair time, that animal may not be the right size."

Registration begins at 8 a.m. in the Lilly Hall of Life Sciences Lobby. Cost is $5, which includes lunch sponsored by Johnsonville Brats.

Purdue’s Animal Sciences and Youth Development and Agricultural Education departments host the event with support from the Indiana Purebred Swine Associations and the Crossbred Classic.
