Don’t put away your winter coat – while unusually warm conditions are threatening to set or tie record highs in areas from California to the Upper Midwest today, winter isn’t over yet.

For many the 2011/2012 winter season has been mostly mild.  According to AccuWeather.com, the Sierra Nevada is currently experiencing a snow drought, and some fear that this drought may continue.

Mike Brumm, a swine consultant, noted in his blog that winter has been late in arriving in Minnesota. Brumm reports that during a period when frost should be at least 1 to 2 feet deep, warm temperatures and no soil moisture have limited frost to no more than 1 to 2 inches deeps in many of the fields.

The abnormally warm temperatures and lack of snow for many areas have left some to wonder when exactly winter will kick into high gear. Will the remaining weeks of winter be filled with snow, ice and blizzards, or will the spring-like conditions continue?

Alex Sosnowski, Expert Senior Meteorologist at AccuWeather.com reports that there are indications that large storms will return to parts of the country during the middle of January. Another cold wave is also expected to impact areas from the Midwest to the East during this time. Click here to read more about the upcoming weather changes.

A storm, due next week, is expected to track to the northeast from the Gulf of Mexico next week and could break the winter weather drought from the Northwest to the East.  The storm may bring rain to places including the Tennessee Valley, the South and New England.

The storm could also bring cold air to the Plains and Midwest.
