You can watch the original State Fair movie and see the Texas State Fair featured, but in the more well-known version (with Pat Boone and Ann Margaret, among others), the Iowa State Fair is the place to be, with its Big Boar contest and iconic Butter Cow.

When it comes to fair food, however, it’s pretty hard to beat the Iowa Pork Tent, with its grilled pork chops, pork burgers and more. It’s not only good, but good for you, unlike most of the other offerings you’ll find at a state fair. Of course, when most people go to the fair, eating “healthy” is not foremost in their minds.

Fried Finishes First
The Texas State Fair has celebrated a “decade of decadence.” Since 2005, the State Fair’s Big Tex Choice Awards contest has solidified the annual exposition as the “Fried Food Capital of Texas.”

Each year, State Fair concessionaires fry up tasty and unique foods for a chance to become a finalist in the Big Tex Choice Awards. Everything from Fried Beer to Fried Peaches and Cream have made the cut to become a part of an exclusive club.

Eight fried concoctions rounded out the 2013 Big Tex Choice Awards and the “Best Tasting” new food was awarded to Issac Russo for his creation, the Fried Cuban Roll (pictured), said to be “savory and delicious.”

The Iowa State Fair is Aug. 7-17 and the Texas State Fair is Sept. 26 to Oct. 19. Whatever state you’re in, make it a point to go to your state fair to honor agriculture and all that farmers do to feed the country and world.
