New university evaluations released by QS World University Rankings has produced a list of the top agriculture and forestry schools in the world with many U.S. schools ranking in the top 10.

According to the rankings, the University of California, Davis is the number one school in the world for teaching and research in the area of agriculture and forestry. Other U.S. universities in the top 10 include Cornell University at number three, the University of Wisconsin-Madison at four, Texas A&M University at five and Purdue University sixth. Oregon State, Penn State and Iowa State rounded out the top 10 at eight, nine and 10 respectively.

Mary Delany, interim dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at UC Davis, said the university is thrilled to receive the number one ranking.

"At the institutional level, this ranking signifies rich teaching and research programs that developed and were built during our more than 100 years of service," she said. "And at the personal level, it reflects the devotion of more than 300 faculty members who are passionate about their fundamental, translational and applied research, and thoroughly devoted to training the next generation of scientists and agriculturalists."

QS World University Rankings have provided university rankings for three years, but this is the first year ranking schools in the agriculture and forestry division. The firm evaluated 2,858 universities and ranked 678 of those institutions in 30 subject areas.

The firm uses six indicators to rank each university: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty-student ratio, proportion of international students and proportion of international faculty -- to form an international ranking of universities.

QS World University Rankings are prepared by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British firm that previously was the data provider for the annual Times Higher Education rankings. The firm is widely considered to be one of the most influential international university rankings providers.

Very bad rankings. Are they talking foresty or row crop or vegetable crop or grape crop or animal because if they are talking row crops or animal these ranking are way way off.

No mention of agriculture or forestry among the "six indicators to rank each university: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty-student ratio, proportion of international students and proportion of international faculty" Sounds like just a good old fashioned mutual admiration society. Why not rank ag/forestry schools not only against themselves but against private organizations who accomplish, by far, most of the successful applied research in farming and forestry? Any measure of 'bang for our buck' relative to output from research budgets would have us de-funding these wasteful schools. They said it themselves -- "more than 300 faculty members" feeding at the trough producing roughly the equivalent of 30 R&D employees at firms like John Deere, Syngenta, Cargill...

So these "top" schools get together to praise each other and pin medals on each other in some sort of internal popularity contest? That's how they judge quality? How terribly out of touch with reality. What a shame so many students are going into debt paying tuition to these ridiculous self-promoting universities. Little wonder these same graduates end up flipping burgers and sorting recycling. Just shameful.
