Kraft Foods officials have announced that the company will cut about 400 jobs in North America in November.

Among the scheduled layoffs will 19 of the 1,600 employees of Kraft's Oscar Mayer unit in Madison, Wis., says Sydney Lindner, Kraft spokesperson. Those employees were notified earlier this week.

The Oscar Mayer layoffs are occurring "on the office side of the organization," notes Lindner. No hourly plant employees are affected. "In Madison, we continue to hire employees on the plant hourly side of our business as we focus on our expanded hot dog and cold cut lines," she adds.

As for the company-wide staff reduction plans, Lindner says "Kraft is navigating an extremely challenging economic environment. Our input costs are at unprecedented levels and show no signs of diminishing."

Kraft has about 103,000 employees worldwide.
