Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller has issued a Request for Applications for grant funds totaling $100,000 for 2009 involving projects that would advance and enhance pork production in Iowa. The proposals are due by Jan. 30.

These grants are materialized in the third year of a program that was funded by Smithfield Foods. The program is paying $1 million over 10 years to fund projects related to increasing profits, helping independent producers compete, making market information available, protecting the environment and other previously agreed upon goals.

This funding is part of a consent decree agreed to in 2005 between Smithfield Foods and the Iowa Attorney General's Office.

Grant application forms, instructions, and requirements are available with the Request for Application. Interested persons also may call the Attorney General's Farm Division at (515) 281-5351, or send an e-mail to farm@ag.state.ia.us.
