Hormel Foods Corp. officials says they intend to break ground on a $89-million microwave meals production facility in Dubuque, Iowa, this summer.

Based in Austin, Minn., Hormel will build a 327,000-square-foot facility, which will be operated by a wholly owned subsidiary of the company. It is expected to be open sometime in November 2009.

"Consumer demand for shelf-stable microwave meals is exploding," according to Jeffrey Ettinger, Hormel's chairman, president and chief executive, as stated in a news release. "This investment will allow us (Hormel) to increase our production capacity and continue our leadership position through innovation and new products."

Initially, the facility will employ 180 people, with more jobs expected to be added in future production phases.
