Animal rights groups have launched a new effort to gather signatures in Arizona to get an initiative to ban gestation stalls on that state’s ballot this year, according to the National Pork Producers Council.

The groups, led by the Humane Society of the United States and under the name Arizonans for Humane Farms, must collect 200,000 signatures by May 31, 2006, to get the initiative on this November’s ballot. An “action alert” recently was sent to animal activist members, looking for additional support in a final push to get the necessary number of signatures.
