Animal rights groups are working to collect signatures to get an initiative on the November ballot that would impact poultry, pork and veal producers. Recently, however, a group called the Californians for Sound Farm Animal Agriculture has formed to oppose the activists' ballot initiative efforts that would ban cages for egg-laying poultry, gestation-sow stalls and veal crates.
The activists working under the title Californians for Humane Farms, is sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States. It needs 433,000 valid signatures by early February to put the initiative on the November 2008 ballot.
CSFAA seeks support from those opposed to the proposed initiative and is circulating a form for such individuals to sign. Initiative opponents ask that the signed form be faxed to Ted Green at (310) 996-2673. More information about the campaign is also available by contacting Green at (310) 996-2670.
