Genus, the United Kingdom’s largest cattle breeder, will buy Sygen International (formerly PIC) for about $333.4 million. The move helps Genus cut costs and gain genetic technology and biotechnology directed at enhancing the meat quality of pork, beef and poultry.

Sygen's uses its technology to enhance meat quality and boost efficiency in meat-animal production, especially pigs. Genus chief executive Richard Wood says he wants to apply it ``across all animal species'' as the company seeks to diversify beyond sales of frozen beef and dairy semen in about 70 nations.

According to the Sygen Web site, the PIC business unit is the world’s leading supplier of breeding stock to pork producers and has 35 percent to 40 percent market share in the Americas.
