USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service will assess the risk posed by highly pathogenic avian influenza virus. The group is seeking public comments on a draft quantitative food safety risk assessment for the avian pathogen from consumption of poultry products, shell eggs and egg products.

The risk assessment will measure the effectiveness of strategies to reduce or prevent exposure to HPAI virus from consumption of poultry meat. It may also be used to develop risk communication messages, identify and prioritize research needs and provide a framework for coordinating efforts.

The risk assessment was created with the Food and Drug Administration and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. It has been reviewed by peers as well as other government agencies. FSIS intends to review and evaluate public comments and make modifications to the assessment as appropriate.
