The American Feed Industry Association has completed a one-year study related to distillers dried grains with solubles. It includes analytical methodologies and DDGS ingredient guidelines along with guidelines for condensed distiller solubles.
More than 40 AFIA member companies participated in the study. DDGS samples were collected from facilities and used to compare 13 evaluation methods for four nutrient components, including moisture, fat, fiber and protein. The study identified five analytical methods from the 13 that provided the best estimates for moisture (one method), crude protein (two nearly equivalent methods) crude fat (one method) and crude fiber (one method). A nearly equivalent crude fiber method was deemed problematic due to the unavailability of essential equipment used in the testing.
