Farmland Foods plans a $25 million expansion of its pork slaughter and processing plant in Denison, Iowa, according to George Richter, president of Farmland Foods.

Richter says the expansion is contingent on approval of an economic incentive package from local, county and state governments and approval by the board of directors of Smithfield Foods, that owns Farmland Foods.

Farmland Foods employs 1,440 people at the Denison plant and has an annual payroll there of $71 million. This expansion would add 220 jobs and increase processing by 60 percent. Most of the increased processing would be in Farmland Foods' branded pork products.
