Annual ethanol production capacity, already up 20 percent over the past 12 months, has climbed to 6.48 billion gallons. By the end of 2007, it is expected to hit 8 billion gallons per year. In the U.S., there are currently 124 ethanol distilleries, with 76 plants under construction and seven plants expanding.

The combined production capacity of current plants plus all those under construction is expected to reach a whopping 12.9 billion gallons per year. That production level would require over 4 billion bushels of corn or approximately one third of this year’s expected crop.
