Eight students compete in the Alltech Young Scientist finals

Alltech has narrowed its global search for the next pioneers of science to eight finalists who will compete for the Alltech Young Scientist Awards during GLIMPSE 2020, the 29th Annual Alltech International Symposium in Lexington, Ky., USA, from May 19-22.

A panel of agriculture industry leaders selected four undergraduate students and four graduate students from more than 8,000 registrants. Registrants were challenged to submit research studies that demonstrated a keen awareness of science and its applications for improving the future of the world.

Representing six continents across the globe, the finalists will engage in the ultimate test of scientific innovation when they present their research during the Alltech Annual International Symposium. The winning graduate student will receive a $10,000 USD scholarship and the winning undergraduate student will receive a $5,000 USD scholarship. The eight finalists ranking at the top of their global regions are:

Undergraduate Level

  • Liangzhan Sun - Shandong Agricultural University, China
  • J.D. Mostert - University of Pretoria, South Africa
  • Amanda Pesqueira - University of Kentucky, USA/University of Maringa, Brazil
  • Nelson Peña - Universidad de Costa Rica, Costa Rica

Graduate Level

  • Nimesha Fernando - University of Melbourne, Australia
  • Olga Ushakova - Izhevsk State Agricultural Academy, Russia
  • Ahmed Mohamed Fouad Yousif - University of Cairo, Egypt
  • Sara Tanner - University of Kentucky, United States

Alltech has also named 46 regional and local award winners who have embraced scientific discovery through research. Global regional winners and local winners of the Alltech Young Scientist Competition receive cash prizes ranging from $300 to $2,000.

“The level of scientific genius demonstrated through this year’s Alltech Young Scientist Competition was astounding,” said Dr. Inge Russell, director of the Alltech Young Scientist Program. “All across the globe, we received research from students who are passionate about going deeper in their knowledge of science. We congratulate the winners all over the world for taking on this challenge and showing great promise for our future.”

Registration and paper submission for the 2013-2014 Alltech Young Scientist Competition is available online now and will close Dec. 31, 2013. Scientific papers submitted for the Alltech Young Scientist  Competition may cover topics including veterinary science, animal nutrition, feed technology, sustainability, agricultural management, marketing, environmental science and economics.

Registration for Alltech’s 29th Annual International Symposium is open now and available for an early discount price of $599 until April 15 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Standard registration after April 15 will be $850. Two paid registrations from a single company or organization will receive a third registration free of charge. Delegates who are members of ARPAS and AAVSB can also earn CEUs.

Attendees are encouraged to register early as space is limited. Of the nearly 3,000 international delegates who attended the 2012 Alltech International Symposium, 97 percent indicated that they plan to attend again.
