Cargill is moving to bring all of its meat operations under one name: Cargill Meat Solutions.
"The move is reflective of the growth of our beef, pork and turkey business," says Mark Klein, Meat Solutions director of communications, adding that Cargill had been working toward setting up the new unit for "the past nine months to a year."
The new venture will be based in Wichita, Kan., where Excel, Cargill’s pork and beef business unit – has had its headquarters since 1941. The new organization will continue to use current Cargill meat brands such as Excel beef and pork, and Sterling Silver meats, and Honeysuckle White turkey.
Klein expects Cargill Meat Solutions to be formally launched in January or February. The new unit will be the second largest meat company in the country, behind Tyson Foods Inc. in Springdale, Ark., and will employ about 33,000 people worldwide.
