North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) officials announced that the Junior Market Swine Show is scheduled for November 9-11, 2013.This event is very popular with youth, and exhibitors came from 20 different states in 2012. Last year there were a record-setting 1,200 entries, and it is anticipated that there will be even more in 2013.

Last year a new drug testing rule was implemented. Once again in 2013, all breed and crossbred Champions and Reserves will be drug tested. Random animals may also be selected for testing.

The show is open to youth 21-years of age and younger. Market hogs are shown in Duroc, Hampshire, Yorkshire, Landrace, Spotted, Chester White, Poland or Berkshire purebred classes or in crossbred classes. In cases where a breed does not have a minimum of 15 head, the purebred class will still be conducted, but premiums will be halved.

Breed class champions and reserves and the three crossbred division champions and reserves all compete for overall Grand and Reserve Champion honors. The two overall winners are auctioned at the NAILE Sale of Champions, along with Junior Steer Show and Junior Wether Sheep Show champions. The sale takes place Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7:00 p.m. All other swine go to market after the show.

Exhibitors showing hogs in the purebred classes must be members of the National Swine Registry or Team Purebred Junior Association. For crossbred barrow or gilt exhibitors, membership is not required. All exhibitors entered must be certified through the Pork Quality Assurance Program.

The Junior Showmanship contest takes place on Saturday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 9. This contest is open to both youngsters exhibiting and those not exhibiting in the show. Classes are broken by age, there is no entry fee, and winners receive rosettes and belt buckles.

The National Swine Registry (NSR), Farm CreditMid-America, and Team Purebred Junior Association co-sponsor the junior swine events.
