After lots of speculation, it seems that Swift & Co. will soon become part of the world’s largest beef processor.

H.M. Capital Partners LLC, the Dallas-based private equity firm that purchased Swift from ConAgra Foods in 2002 in partnership with Booth Creek Management Corporation, has announced that it will sell the company to J&F Participações S.A. of Brazil. Swift is currently the United States' third-largest processor of fresh pork and beef.

J&F owns 77 percent of JBS S.A., Latin America’s largest beef processor. The companies expect to complete the $1.4 billion transaction by July.

Part of J&F's stated motivation in purchasing Swift is to establish a global presence and gain access to more export markets, such as the Pacific Rim, where consumers have shown a preference to U.S. product.

A company press release says that Swift will retain its organizational identity, customer and supplier relationships and "substantially all of its employees and leadership team."
